Gardening is both an art and science in Animal Crossing Flower Breed: New Horizons. You can buy standard flower seeds and plant them around your island to make it seem nice. But if you want to up your gardening game, you’ll have to learn how to breed flowers to get brand-new colors. Black, blue, purple, pink, and orange hybrid flowers. As well as the extra-special, rare gold roses, are among the hybrid flowers available.
Hybrid flowers aren’t only lovely; they can also attract unusual bugs that you wouldn’t find otherwise. And they can be utilized as crafting supplies, so having a few on your island is a good idea. The ACNH Floral Research determine provided the technical details for this guide. It includes flower genes and availability details.

Types Of Flowers

On their cliffs, each player has a native flower. These will be available for purchase at your business at all times. More flower breeds will be available for purchase if you complete Nook’s Cranny. You might have to visit some friends’ islands or get lucky on a Nook Miles island to earn a large number of them rapidly.
You can crossbreed and create unique hybrid hues, just like in previous Animal Crossing games. The ideal way to do this is to arrange your flowers in a checkerboard pattern, leaving every other area open for pollination and the development of hybrid flowers.
Flowers need water to develop and create hybrids, whether it comes from the rain or from you and your Watering Can. Flowers that have been watered glisten.
According to data mines from flower researcher Aeter, having friends from other islands water your flowers increases the likelihood of the flowers producing progeny.
Flowers can be picked without uprooting the entire plant. When you press Y while standing on a flower, the flower will be picked and the stems will sprout. These flowers can be used in a number of D.I.Y. recipes.
Even if the flowers aren’t hybrid colors, certain flowers planted close together will produce new blossoms. These hybrid colors aren’t for sale, and their creation necessitates crossbreeding.
Native Flowers And Sisters
Nook’s Cranny’s flower stock will change every day. With three different types of flowers accessible at any one time. Your island will have one type of natural flower, as indicated above. This flower is always in stock at Nook’s Cranny. You’ll have a sister flower as well, which will always be available. The third flower in stock on any given day is determined by the month in which it is found. And it might vary from day to day within that month. Roses, tulips, and wildflowers, for example, are all in bloom in May in the Northern Hemisphere. If none of these flowers are native or sister flowers to you. Also, they’ll be available at Nook’s Cranny daily in May.
Native flowers are decided at random based on whatever flowers are in season. During your starting character’s birth month. Whereas your sister flower is one of the flowers in season during the month you established your island. According to data mined information. Visit a few Mystery Tour islands if you’re not sure what your sister flower is. You’ll only find your native flower or your sister flower on these islands.
You’ll have some difficulty purchasing specific sorts of flowers from the shop straight away. Because only three of the eight types of flower seeds are available for sale on any given day. Fortunately, you can get these flower seeds from friends’ islands. Assuming they have different native and/or sister flowers than you. Or from the special guest Leif, who has seeds you couldn’t get anywhere else. If you’ve added each other as Best Friends. You can also dig up flowers on each other’s islands (with permission!). Read more about how to add Best Friends in our tutorial.
How to breed flowers?
Crossbreeding (or simply “breeding”) two other flowers is the most common approach to producing new flowers. Flowers can only breed if they are of the same species. But there are a few more requirements to meet as well. These are the ones:
The flowers are placed close to one another (either directly or diagonally)
l They’re either fully blossomed or in the process of blooming (meaning they will be fully bloomed the next day)
l They’ve been sprayed with water (either by any type of watering can or by rain)
l There is an open area next to them.
If these conditions are met, a new blossom may develop the next day in adjoining vacant areas. There is no limit to the number of fresh flowers that can spawn each day, unlike in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Flowers will only spawn on dirt and dark dirt paths, not any other type of path you can create with Island Designer, so keep that in mind when landscaping.
This act of producing new blooms is referred known as “breeding,” although it does not always imply that you will receive a hybrid flower. Two white blooms next to each other, for example, can sometimes generate another white flower. This is a great technique to get additional flowers without having to buy seeds, and it’s also necessary for obtaining some ultra-rare hybrids.
Cloning
When a flower is watered, it has a chance of producing a new flower of the same color. The new flower will contain the identical “genes” as the original flower. Which is referred to as “cloning” (see the section on genes below). Cloning is useful if you want to quickly and readily increase your hybrids. If you want to employ a certain flower breed for subsequent breeding. It’s worth noting that gold roses can’t be cloned.

Visitor watering Bonus
Invite your buddies to your island to help you water the flowers you’re growing! This has a distinct advantage: if flowers have been watered by a visitor. Their chances of producing offspring, either by breeding or cloning, increase. This effect stacks up to five visitors (with the effect continuously growing). And can considerably enhance the production of new flowers. So if you have willing friends, having them water your flowers can significantly speed up breeding.
How to get a Golden Watering Can?
When it comes to gold roses, you’ll need a particular tool: the golden watering can. Except when watering black roses, it functions in the same way as conventional watering cans. Except it can water more blooms at once (details below). You’ll need a five-star town evaluation from Isabelle to get the golden watering can DIY recipe. To get five stars, you’ll need a lot of fences, and flowers. And furniture to decorate your island, & Isabelle will point you to what you’re missing. When she does her evaluations. If you get five stars, Isabelle will give you the recipe for the golden watering can. Which you can make whenever you want as long as you have the ingredients.
Flower Genes
Flowers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons features “genes” that determine both hue & the color of children. They can breed, according to extensive data mining. Except for roses, which have four genes (thus why they’re so difficult to breed). Each variety of flowers has three genes. The technical subtleties of genes can be found in Saleh’s Advanced Flower Genetics Guide. Which employs data-mined information; for this guide, however. We’ll focus on the practical applications for accessible flower breeding.
Flowers in New Horizons, for the most part, use Mendelian genetics, which you learn about in basic biology. That suggests flowers have recessive and dominant genes. Similar to Punnett squares, which determine the flower’s hue. In other circumstances, two or more different combinations of genes can produce the same color flower. This is where chain breeding—is the process of breeding flowers. Then take the flowers you’ve grown and breed them to get a different hue. It can become extremely difficult. Fortunately, every flower comes from a seed bag. Whether purchased from Nook’s Cranny or Leif has the same DNA, allowing for consistency.
For example, basic red pansies are the kind you plant from a seed bag. It can be crossed with blue pansies to produce more red pansies. Even though they seem identical. The red pansies you get from this red-blue combination have different genes from the red pansies. Also, you obtain from seed bags; they’re generally referred to as “hybrid red,”. While the typical ones are referred to as “seed red.” You can breed two hybrid-red pansies together to get purple due to the genetic difference. But you can’t get purple pansies from seed-red pansies. You must keep track of which reds come from seed bags. And which comes from breeding with blue pansies if you want to raise purple pansies.
You won’t have to worry about genes too much with some flowers. Such as lilies, cosmos, tulips, and hyacinths. Because their genotypes are quite basic and require just minimum, easy-to-track chain breeding. If you want to get the rarest hues from the others, especially roses. You’ll have to pay close attention to the flowers you cultivate and breed. This is also where biological research comes into play. Because after you’ve found one, it’s useful to clone the most difficult-to-find genetic combinations.
Mystery Island Hybrid
Before the 1.2.0 release, hybrid flowers may be found during a Mystery Tour to a deserted island. These islands, however, were removed from the Mystery Tour roster with that update. And they haven’t appeared in the game since. If you were lucky enough to bring home some hybrid flowers from one of these islands. Or if you haven’t yet received the game’s 1.2.0 update. You’ll be able to save a lot of time breeding flowers. Therefore we’ll put the characteristics of these Mystery Island hybrids in this guide for reference.
Hybrids found on these Mystery Tours contain different DNA. Those which can be bred on your island from seed flowers. These hybrids can make chain breeding for ultra-rare hues much easier in some situations. So if you manage to get your hands on one, keep track of which flower it is!
What to do with flowers?
Flowers are used in New Horizons in a variety of ways. Apart from planting and watering them. You can also harvest them with Y—and unlike previous Animal Crossing games. Also, you can pick flowers without losing the entire plant. And the blooms will come again in two days. This allows you to utilize flowers in a variety of crafting methods, such as wreaths and furniture. You may also use flowers as decoration in your home or on your island. Flowers can also be attrited in your hair!
Flowers are very vital to your island’s ecosystem. They boost your island rating (which Isabelle can inform you about). They attract various bug species, and they’re just plain gorgeous. Butterflies, stinkbugs, mantises, ladybugs & honeybees will only appear on or near flowers. So you’ll need at least a few flowers around your island if you want to catch them.
You can also make money by selling flowers (either the plant itself or picked flowers). While most don’t sell for much, and you don’t need or desire can be sold for a profit. Gold and blue roses, on the other hand, sell for 1,000 bells each. Also, you may turn them into a farm and harvest them like a fruit trees.
Hybrid Flower
For each species and color of flower in New Horizons, we’ve included all of the critical breeding combinations. Based on Paleh’s Advanced Flower Genetics Guide and our testing. We’ve only included the best pairings for each hybrid color. Because we’re assuming you’re starting with seeds. Due to the way flower genes function, you may notice other combinations. We haven’t included produce hybrids—this usually happens. Also, when you have “hybrid” versions of the regular colors, such as the hybrid-red pansies.
Most of the stated pairings simply have a chance to create a hybrid color. It may occasionally give you a different hue. But in the more intricate circumstances where chain breeding is an issue. We’ve specified the %. The possibility of getting the desired color/gene combination. Only when the flowers breed is represented by this percentage. We propose cloning a flower rather than trying to breed it with itself. If you want to produce more of a specific color.

1. Cosmos

Cosmos have only one chain: orange to black, making them simple & easy to breed.
Basic combos:
- red + white = pink
- red + yellow = orange
- orange + orange = black (rare)
Best combo for black cosmos:
black = island orange + island orange (around 19 percent )
2. Hyacinths

Without any complicated genetic chains, you can get every hue of hyacinth, but purple is extremely rare. If you descend blues from oranges and then exercise those blues to the line. Your chances of acquiring purple increase dramatically (to 25%). These blues are identical to those found on Mystery Tour islands, and they also work.
Basic combos:
- red + white = pink
- red + yellow = orange
- white + white = blue
- orange + orange = purple
Blue rose method 1 (Mystery Island)
- orange + orange = special blue (12.5%)
- special blue + special blue = purple
- island blue + island blue = purple
- island blue + island orange = purple
- island orange + island orange = purple
3. Lilies

Lilies are the most straightforward flower to grow. And you can get every hue without resorting to chain breeding. None of the hues are particularly uncommon!
Basic combos:
- red + white = pink
- red + yellow = orange
- red + red = black or pink
4. Mums

Green mums are the only flower species that may be found in the wild. And there are a few different ways to obtain them. Because seed yellow can be produced by hybrid yellow + hybrid yellow. Only get hybrid yellows from seed red + seed yellow or by cloning a hybrid yellow.
Basic combos:
- red + white = pink
- white + white = purple
- seed red + seed yellow = hybrid yellow (100%)
- hybrid yellow + hybrid yellow = green (rare)
Best method for green mums:
- hybrid yellow + hybrid yellow = special purple (25%)
- special purple + special purple = green (25%)
Other combos for green mums:
- island purple + island pink = green (around 19%)
- island purple + island purple = green (rare)
5. Pansies

The most difficult pansy, like hyacinths, is the purple one, which is extremely rare. Yet, the chain is relatively straightforward. If you use hybrid pansies from a Mystery Tour island, your chances increase to 25%.
Basic combos:
- red + yellow = orange
- white + white = blue
- red + blue = hybrid red (100%)
- hybrid red + hybrid red = purple (rare)
Best combos for purple pansies:
- island blue + island blue = purple
- island orange + island orange = purple
- island blue + island orange = purple
6. Roses

Roses are the game’s most intricate flower, while blue roses are the game’s rarest flower. To get blue roses, there are a few chain-breeding procedures. They are a little tricky, so bear with me. Keep in mind that, unless otherwise specified. You should always use standard colors. Either the seed colors or the hybrids you produce from those seed colors. So to guarantee that the genes are right. This is taken from Paleh’s Advanced Flower Genetics Guide. Which has been simplified for people who don’t want to get into the scientific details.
Basic combos:
- red + white = pink
- red + yellow = orange
- red + red = black or pink
- white + white = purple
- black + seed yellow = orange (100%; same genes as seed red + seed yellow)
- black (watered with gold watering can) = gold
1. Blue rose method 1 (Mystery Island)
- island orange + island orange = blue (rare) OR island hybrid red
- island hybrid red + island hybrid red = blue (25%)
If you’re lucky enough to have roses as your native or sister flower (or know someone who does). You may skip all of the hard steps below. And just utilize island hybrid roses to get blue roses quickly.
2. Blue rose method 2 (simplest)
- orange + purple = hybrid red (25%, & another 25% will be the wrong kind of red)
- hybrid red + hybrid red = blue (1.6%)
This method is ineffective, mostly because there is no way to tell if your red roses are the correct shade of red. You only have to be extremely lucky, and while this is feasible, it is inefficient. Note that this hybrid red differs from the island hybrid red above. The hybrid red 2 is below in terms of genes.
3. Blue rose method 3 (recommended)
- seed white + seed white = purple
- seed red + seed red = black
- black + purple = special red
- special red + special red = hybrid red
- hybrid red + hybrid red = blue (1.6%)
4. Blue Rose Method 4
This is the most time-consuming of the methods. But you’ll have a 25% chance of receiving blue roses from two-hybrid red roses by the end. These are different from the above hybrid reds and are labeled “hybrid red 2” below for clarity. Because this is such a complicated breed, it’s best to only breed these in pairs. Rather than grids or any other breeding pattern with three or more flowers.
- seed white + seed yellow = special white 1
- seed white + seed white = purple
- special white 1 + purple = special purple (50%)
Only half of the purple offspring will be the appropriate kind at this point. You can either gamble or test to see whether these purples are the ones you need to keep this approach going.
- Good: purple + seed yellow = white or hybrid yellow (it’s 50/50)
- Bad: purple + seed yellow = white only
If you only receive white flowers after a few tries. So that purple isn’t the appropriate kind of purple, and you need to get rid of it before proceeding. Any yellow roses leftover from this phase should be saved & utilized later in the chain.
7. Tulips

Back to the basics with flowers. Tulips, like hyacinths, come in a variety of colors. But purple ones are the most difficult to come by. By breeding hybrids from a Mystery Tour island. You can enhance your odds of acquiring a purple tulip by 25%.
Basic combos
- red + white = pink
- red + yellow = orange
- red + red = black
- orange + orange = purple (rare)
Best combos for purple tulips
- island black + island black = purple
- island orange + island orange = purple
- island black + island orange = purple
8. Windflowers

Most of the stated pairings simply have a chance to create a hybrid color. And may occasionally give you a different hue. But in the more intricate circumstances where chain breeding is an issue. We’ve specified the %. The possibility of getting the desired color/gene combination. when the flowers breed is represented by this percentage. We propose cloning a flower. Rather than trying to breed it with itself if you want to produce more of a specific color.
Elementary combos:
- red + orange = pink
- white + white = blue
- red + blue = hybrid red (100%)
- ink + blue = hybrid red (25%)
- pink + blue = special pink (25%)
Top-grade combos for purple windflowers:
- hybrid red + hybrid red = special blue (half of the blue offspring)
- To test the blues, breed them together. Special blues produce pinks half the time. While normal ones will only produce oranges.
- special blue + special blue = purple
- island pink + island pink = purple
- island blue + island blue = purple
- sland blue + island pink = purple
Other combos for purple windflowers:
- hybrid red + hybrid red = purple (rare)
- special pink + special pink = purple (rare)
- special pink + hybrid red = purple (rare)
