Published by Electronic Arts in November and December 2009, Dragon Age: Origins is considered to be a “dark heroic fantasy with mature themes”. It is even thought of by many to be the “spiritual successor” to the Baldur’s Gate game series which, in turn, was based on the original Dungeons & Dragons RPGs.

Dragon Age: Origins is set in the mythical kingdom of Ferelden, with players assuming either the role of a mage, rogue, or warrior who must unite this strife-ridden kingdom in order to repel a demon invasion. Each of these classes may be upgraded into specialisations like berserkers, templars, rangers, assassins, spirit healers, and shape-shifters.

Players embark on their adventures using a “party system” whereby the featured main character is accommodated by up to three other party members chosen from a non-playing character (NPC) pool. Decisions the player makes throughout the game influence the accompanying NPCs, who may leave the party or even attack the player if they strongly disagree with them.

Characters are also given unique backgrounds depending on their race and class. These unique characters are what put the word “origins” in the game’s title, as each character gets a different story depending on their origins.

Most reviewers praised the game’s storyline and adherence to classic RPG-gaming styles, despite any perceived lack of originality. Giant Bomb, for example, described Dragon Age Origins as being “a real throwback to the good old days of PC role-playing epics.”

The game also features downloadable content. By November 12, 2009, sales of the downloadable add-ons, namely “Warden’s Keep” and “The Stone Prisoner” had generated more than million in sales revenue for BioWare. An additional expansion pack, “Awakening”, was also released to the public March 16, 2010.

Since the game’s launch even more expansion packs have been released, including titles like “Blood Dragon Armor”, “Return to Ostagar”, “Darkspawn Chronicles”, and “Leliana’s Song”.

The game became an immediate success, overwhelmed with positive reviews by professional gamers and amateurs alike. The PC-version received scores of 95%, 90.17%, 91%, and 90% from GameSpot, GameRankings, Metacritic, and Game Information, respectively. The PS3 version, suffering from visual issues like disappearing and reappearing corpses, faired slightly worse, receiving 85.92% and 87% from Game Rankings and Metacritic, respectively.

Dragon Age: Origins even won several awards, such as the “Role-Playing/Massively Multi-player Game of the Year 2009″ award from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Science, game of the Year 2009 from U.S. PC Gamer, and “Best PC Role-Playing Game of the Year” from Imagine Games Network (IGN).

Dragon Age: Origins is available on the Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 gaming platforms.

DEAD RISING: MAUL OF AMERICA

Crispin: Gamers grew up surviving terrible Resident Evil gore video games to observe and de-force Dawn of the Dead know remake that every real-life walking dead would revolt both kick ass (hey, everything is free in the mall!) And suck ass (Why Aunt Karen is trying to eat my colon?). No game encapsulates the dichotomy as apocalyptic Dead Rising one million zombie march brawler that will happen to the best s *** ty game play ever.

How easy would it be for Mega been Man, Onimusha creator Keiji Inafune to wield the powerful 360 hardware, thousands of zombies in a so-real-you-can-smell-the-Cinnabon Mall pump, then just the players carve open letter by the recently deceased. But Dead Rising is so much more balls in the mall than, say, the similarly venued State of Emergency. You can not just your hero everyone photojournalist Frank West, you are using everything from HDTVs to lawnmower as a weapon, but most terms of special effects. Western Wall on corpses produced by a guitar power chords with every beat. Skateboards serve as a transport and a way to clear a path. And racing through herds of zombies in a jacked up car is simply the coolest thing ever.

It makes for an experience to see this as fun as it’s playing – until you would scream spook your peanut gallery with frustrated that the dead man. Dead Rising is to rescue an old pain in the ass, just a slot that holds at a time. The old saying Gaming “Save often” is not an option either, because you have to walk to do on certain issues. Now consider that you are here on the Clock: The game offers 72 hours (the vertical take-off of faster than real time) to dig up the reasons for the undead return. Dally too long on one of the many escort crazy side missions, and you run the risk of late for an important event history. The result: you have to start this game over a few times until you focus on the important things and avoid being burned by the storage system to learn (thankfully, hold the special moves you earn by building your character). Dead Rising it is in a kind of Groundhog Day of the Dead, where you repeat the story over and over again until you get it right. It’s as if Dead Rising revival holds itself as unkillable as your Aunt Karen.

Demian: I just do not understand how this could happen. And no, I do not mean: “How could an entire city to come up with a bad case of the zombies?” I mean, “How could a game with so much potential just totally fail to do the simple things right?” Dead Rising shows moments of fascination, but the good bits are often under classical, cardinal design sin, as the horrible save system, Crispin already gutted, stop-running-in-the-wall allies already AI, unfun and buried frustrating boss battles.

But if you come with Dead Rising strange quirks – and avoid flying into a rage when it totally screws you – you will find some really cool moments too. Wade into a crowd of undead with a chainsaw, bust open a gum ball machine and watch the zombies walk in pratfall mode heat up a pan on the stove, and then one-shot of the brain-dead …. If you have the patience, there is a great game.

1up.com – Robert: Dead Rising nails the atmosphere of shopping in America: Dinky the music, the colorful decor, and the eerie neatness (stack shirts, rows of canned food, etc.) (Wild West food court theme!). The whole thing is a send-up of consumer culture, which elicits a simple customer complaint: High definition is great, but you also have an option for the old school boob tubes. I destroyed my eyes trying to read the microscopic text in Dead Rising. It did not spoil the pleasure of conducting experiments zombie dismemberment of power tools and “fixing” the game terrible story scenes with silly costumes (Mega Man helmet Drama = Laughter). Dead Rising is just frustrating when you play it in a straight line. Enjoy some carnage, take some photos and start level up, and then a run for the extension.
