The Xbox Kinect first made its appearance during last year’s E3 Convention. Since then, gamers have been anxiously awaiting its release. However, not everyone is excited. Wii lovers worry that their system of choice might become obsolete too quickly if Kinect games become more popular.
Already, the Xbox Kinect features two major advantages over the Wii. In addition to having superior graphics, the Xbox Kinect does not require a collection of expensive controllers. The Wii cannot make the same claim. Its graphics are blurry and somewhat blocky… similar to what gamers had to deal with when playing the PS1 or the Nintendo 64. Also, many of the Wii’s more unique games require a separate controller. These devices range from $10 to $50. This does not include the cost of the game!
Before Nintendo could get away with this because they appealed to a different type of market. Their titles were geared towards those interested in fitness and/or those who wanted to play games simultaneously with their friends. There are also causal gamers who appreciate the “relaxed” nature of many Wii games. This is the complete opposite of the Xbox 360 market, who like hardcore games where you get an adrenalin rush. Microsoft hopes things will change once the Wii crowd becomes introduced to the Xbox Kinect. If this happens, they will double their market without spending millions on a new console.
In fact, many of the new Kinect games will actually be clones of existing Wii titles. Fitness Evolved is one such game, as it mimics Wii Fit. However, unlike Wii Fit, no extra devices are required to play. This will also be the case with Kinect Joy Ride and Kinectimals, (games which mimic Mario Kart and Nintendogs, respectively). Microsoft seems determined to siphon off of Nintendo’s innovation, even down to the types of games they are releasing for their new device.
However, this approach may be counterproductive for certain games. Imagine trying to play a Kinect version of Link’s Crossbow Training. It would actually be more annoying trying to play without a control, (unless you are an expert at miming). In addition, there are some gamers who prefer traditional gaming with a regular control. Nintendo realized this, which is why they offer a standard gaming experience with both their Wii-Mote and their Classic Controller. Microsoft needs to use a similar approach if they want to keep much of their audience.
All in all, it appears that the Xbox Kinect will offer a promising addition to the gaming world. The idea of controlling a game with just your body is very appealing. It adds a level of interactivity gamers have never seen. Microsoft will just need to make sure the titles they release are fitting for that type of experience. Otherwise, people might abandon Kinect games because the gameplay seems too odd.
